It's January 1, 2026 and big things are happening! VI FERT officially becomes the BC Ferret Rescue Society!
VI FERT began as a small, passionate group of volunteers on Vancouver Island dedicated to helping ferrets in need. At a time when ferrets were often misunderstood and underserved by traditional animal welfare systems, VI FERT stepped in to provide rescue, rehabilitation, education, and advocacy for these unique animals. The organization quickly became a trusted resource for ferret owners, veterinarians, across the Island.
As the years went on, the need for ferret rescue and support grew beyond Vancouver Island. VI FERT increasingly found itself helping animals from the mainland and collaborating with rescuers and shelters throughout the province. What started as a regional effort was clearly becoming a provincial one.
To better reflect the scope of its work and its long-term mission, on January 1, 2026 VI FERT evolved into the BC Ferret Rescue Society. The new name represented more than a rebranding, it marked a commitment to serving ferrets across all of British Columbia.
Today, BC Ferret Rescue Society continues the heart and values of VI FERT while operating with a broader reach. The organization rescues ferrets from across BC, provides medical care and foster homes, educates the public about responsible ferret ownership, and works to ensure ferrets are recognized as deserving of the same compassion and protection as any other companion animal.
The transition from VI FERT to BC Ferret Rescue Society reflects growth, dedication, and an unwavering belief that every ferret deserves a safe, healthy, and loving home.
